Our philosophy

Prevention comes first

Medically speaking, prevention is the first and most important step you can take to reduce the risk of diseases.

However, when it comes to certain diseases, early diagnosis - that is, identifying a disease in its early stages - is as important as prevention.

Some of the diseases for which early diagnosis is essential are chronic diseases. They can be devoid of any symptom for the longest time, and the body does not realize it is sick, until the disease is already very serious.

This kind of disease - such as diabetes - can be diagnosed early. This is why check-ups are needed even when patients are feeling well, and they do not suspect a thing.

Let's avoid chronic dental diseases with prevention and early diagnosis

In dentistry, the most common dental diseases - such as cavities and periodontitis - are chronic diseases that can go without symptoms for many years.

Cavities

In adults, cavities can form and go unopposed for long periods, without showing any symptom or causing pain. It is very common to discover even big cavities and hear the patient say: "Are you sure, Doctor? I never felt any pain."

In children, cavities are even faster and more devious, because their teeth are less resistant, and a tiny hole on the outside can hide a pit inside the tooth.

Periodontitis

Concerning periodontitis - or periodontal diseases - Umberto Bar - one of the first dentists to ever treat this disease - called it "bone cavity", and it takes over 10 year to cause tooth loss. It is common to hear: "Doctor, I've had periodontitis for a few months now. My teeth are moving". Even though the teeth are healthy, they've lost most of their supporting bone, which slowly reabsorbed over time.

This is why those people who only see a dentist when in pain, will hardly age with their own teeth: they will probably lose them earlier.

We educate our patients on oral health since childhood

Therefore, one of the most important jobs of our clinic is educating our patients about treating those diseases before they show any symptoms.

We must educate first, and then cure.

In our clinic, early diagnosis starts since childhood. It is no traumatic experience for children, quite the contrary, their visit is comforting and reassuring. When they are 3-4 years old, they come in with their mum for her hygiene check-up, they play and watch her. When is their turn to sit on the chair to check their teeth, it is still a game.

These children we visit with healthy teeth - and new healthy teeth - will reach 90 years old with all their teeth in their mouth, with just a few fillings, if they devote a little bit of time to us.

We started dealing with prevention and early diagnosis in the 1970s, and now we are treating the children of those first children we treated back then, all with healthy mouths. Surely, they will never need veneers or implants.

Implants for the most serious cases

Concerning implants, the important thing to know is that there is a strong commercial drive behind them. Implants were created for the purpose of replacing a missing or incurable tooth. Many teeth that have been pulled out, if diagnosed earlier or treated correctly, could have been cured by an expert professional, with great biological - and often economical - benefits.

Postponing an implant by 10-15 years means having a 10-15 year younger implant. One thing to remark is that implant are not forever, and they too can get periodontitis and lose the supporting bone. This disease is called peri-implantitis, and is very difficult to treat. This is why we always prefer teeth.

Obviously, whenever necessary, or when a tooth is missing, we can place dental implants even if the bone is missing, using advanced regenerating techniques.
